Educational pilgrimage

The facilitated walk starts in Stellenbosch where various sites are visited, from there it winds through the Ida’s Valley Nature Area and the pristine Helshoogte Pass. The journey ends at the Pniël heritage yard. This pilgrimage guides learners through a journey of acknowledging past injustices and making a personal commitment to be part of creating a future in South Africa where all communities can enjoy a free and prosperous future.

Itinerary

08h30: Meet at the Rhynse Sending Kerk. Walk from Stellenbosch town centre to Lückhoff School, passing several places of significance before continuing to the Ida’s Valley Dam.

10h30: Enjoy a break at the Ida’s Valley Dam while appreciating the spectacular setting.

11h30: Refreshments at the top of Helshoogte Pass before descending into the Dwarsrivier Valley.

12h30: Zorgvliet comfort break. Leaving Zorgvliet behind, we’ll cross the R310 into Ou Bethlehem at the Kylemore entrance, continuing to Johannesdal.

13h30: Re-joining the R310 for the last 1.2km to Die Werf, Pniël.

14h00: Arrive at Die Werf, visiting the social impact monuments.

  • You will be given a stone and spekboom cutting to carry with you on the route, as a symbolic token of social justice.

  • It is recommended that visitors be in good physical condition as this is a 16km walk

Visitors can drive to the starting point or a return transfer from the Visit Stellenbosch Tourism Centre (47 Church Street, Stellenbosch) can be booked here.
