Freedom Tours

Walk a journey to freedom

We offer a range of informative walking tours in and around Stellenbosch, that cover the towns history of oppression and journey to freedom. The tours are educational and celebrate democracy, transformation, human development and nation building.

Schools can select from four tours on offer and combine them to create a custom experience based on time and budget. Design the perfect experience for learners by combing the following tours into an exciting half or full day experience.

Kayamandi
Walk through the Kayamandi township and learn more about the history that formed this vibrant community. This walking adventure starts and ends at Amazink, where you will meet your local resident guides and receive a historic briefing on the area. The journey sets off on foot in a circular route, weaving through shacks and visiting participating community shops, businesses, schools and attractions.

Pniël
Enjoy a guided walk through the heritage sites of the quant village of Pniël. Learn more about the history of the freed slaves that settled here after the abolition of slavery in 1843. This easy circular walk starts and ends at the Pniël museum and is presented by local resident guides.

Vlakte
This informative tour tells the story of the decline of race relations in Stellenbosch in the 1940’s, the reality of Apartheid laws and the forcible removal of 3 700 people in Die Vlakte in 1964. The tour is led by local guides, who tells the stories of the many lives, schools, churches and businesses affected by this historical injustice.

Stellenbosch University Redress on Foot

Redress means to ‘set things right’, and this exciting experience offers a look at the changes and creative additions to the campus.
